Readers, on the other hand, would have been at least dimly aware of the nature of the husband’s secret because of the conventions of fiction, where only details strictly relevant to either texture or plot are mentioned. Real life, on the other hand, is nothing but texture; there is no plot, and therefore details that are later recognized as having been significant are not noticed when they occur. The fast friendship of two men need not be perceived by a naive young woman as the cause of their being shunned by their social peers, but with these matters spotlighted by an author, even before “closet,” “outing,” and “LGBT” had become part of daily speech, any reader must have seen a connection.

The goal of the plot is to lay bare what was then considered an unmentionable, almost inconceivable vice. The plot consists of a gradual peeling away of the veneer masking the husband’s infidelity, with the injured wife remaining one step behind the reader throughout. To appreciate the dramatic irony generated by this process, modern readers, who will be already five steps ahead of the wife, must adjust their powers of insight to see the story from the point of view of the original audience, bearing in mind that some women at that time could be completely ignorant of sexual intercourse itself. Indeed, there is no evidence in the novel that the betrayed wife even knew enough about sex to realize that married couples engaged in any greater intimacy than passionate kissing.

Even when she finds herself on the verge of full knowledge, she does not realize that her husband's condition is a matter of his innate nature rather than simply of behavior, but he does. At this point, the story's interest shifts from wife to husband, and the reader begins to see the entire story from his point of view—as a desperate experiment that has gone tragically awry. Much of the baseball language in these stories may sound unfamiliar to us. For example, Grey uses the word “swing” in reference to the pitcher’s windup, not the motion of the bat. I hope fans will enjoy discovering many other “new” baseball terms from 100 years ago.

Five of the stories (sections 2 - 6) are closely related. They are all about the same fictional minor league team, they share a cast of characters, and they are all narrated by the team’s manager. Not only that, but, taken together, they form a single complete story arc of both a baseball season and a double romance. Unfortunately, and for reasons mysterious to me, they are out of order in the book. If the listener wants to experience the saga of “The Rube” as a whole, I recommend listening to these sections in this order: 2-5-4-3-6.

Some of the stories include stereotypical and offensive references to indigenous North Americans (which unfortunately persist in some form in our own time). I hope these historical representations of the attitudes of white Americans of the early 20th century can serve as opportunities for reflection and discussion. These memoirs focus primarily on the two years Juliette Kinzie spent in the Wisconsin wilderness. Through the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, she traces the French dependence on Native alliances, the shifting relationships among tribal groups, and the rivalry between French traders and the Dutch and English merchants of upper New York for trade and influence.

Der Beginn der Novelle ist in eine ruhige Abendstimmung eingebettet, nachdem ein Zug an einem kleinen Bahnhof bei Breslau angekommen ist. Zwei Männer steigen aus, von denen einer ein in der Gegend bekannter Arzt ist. Der andere Reisende, der mit dem Ort nicht vertraut ist, kommt mit dem Arzt ins Gespräch und deutet dabei ein unheilvolles Gefühl an, das den Baron und dessen Familiengeschichte umgibt. Gemeinsam bemerken sie ein seltsames, flackerndes Licht im Schloss des Barons, das weitere Fragen nach dessen Wohlergehen aufwirft und Verdacht hinsichtlich der Vorgänge im Inneren des Schlosses schürt.

Im weiteren Verlauf der Erzählung führen die Spannungen um den geistigen Zustand des Barons und sein mögliches romantisches Interesse an Anna zu einer Verflechtung gesellschaftlicher Normen mit innerer Zerrissenheit.
