A, B, AB oder 0 – kennst du deine Blutgruppe? 🩸 In einem Notfall entscheidet sie darüber, welches Spenderblut du bekommen kannst. Sie kann aber auch beeinflussen, wie schwer bestimmte Infektionen verlaufen. Im Laufe unserer Evolution waren verschiedene Blutgruppen nämlich ein Überlebensvorteil. 👊

Silvana Condemi und Stéphane Mazières von der Universität @AixMarseilleUniversité-d1z untersuchten Blutgruppenmerkmale von Neandertalern und Denisova-Menschen. Ihre Forschung zeigt: Schon frühe Menschenarten besaßen die Gene des AB0-Systems. 🧬 Beim Homo sapiens nahm die Vielfalt weiterer Blutgruppenmerkmale jedoch deutlich zu. Heute gibt es 48 Blutgruppensysteme, die die verschiedenen Oberflächenmerkmale von Roten Blutkörperchen beschreiben – darunter Rhesus, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, Lewis.

Diese genetische Vielfalt war schon immer ein evolutionärer Vorteil. Bei der „Balancing Selection“, auch ausgleichende Selektion genannt, setzt sich nicht dauerhaft eine einzige genetische Variante durch. Stattdessen bleiben verschiedene Varianten in der Population erhalten, weil Krankheitserreger Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Blutgruppen verschieden stark treffen. 🦟
Besonders deutlich zeigt sich das bei Malaria: Menschen mit Blutgruppe A, B oder AB haben ein höheres Risiko für einen schweren Verlauf als Menschen mit Blutgruppe 0. Dafür kann Blutgruppe 0 bei anderen Krankheiten ein Nachteil sein. Welche Blutgruppen in einer Region besonders häufig sind, hängt deshalb vermutlich auch davon ab, welche Krankheitserreger dort über lange Zeit verbreitet waren.

Heute bringt diese Vielfalt neue Probleme mit sich: Bei Bluttransfusionen und Organtransplantationen muss das Blut kompatibel sein. Besonders schwierig wird es bei extrem seltenen Blutgruppen wie „Gwada“, die bislang nur bei einer einzigen Frau aus Guadeloupe entdeckt wurde. Gleichzeitig könnte die Vielfalt auch künftig nützlich sein, als genetische Reserve gegen neue Infektionen.

Growing up in rural South Africa, Tshilidzi Marwala first learned about engineering from his grandmother’s handmade clay pots. Now rector of the United Nations University, the Under-Secretary-General is a vocal advocate of using artificial intelligence (AI) for good.

Education has been a driving force throughout Tshilidzi Marwala’s life, alongside the seismic transitions he has witnessed in his native country and around the world. “We [returned to South Africa just after the end of apartheid] and then we realized that freedom is beautiful… Democracy is a beautiful concept, but it's a very difficult journey. ECB President Christine Lagarde explained why the Governing Council decided not to raise interest rates despite concerns about the latest shock.

Lagarde said that if concern alone were enough, the ECB would have hiked rates.

She stressed that any shock of this nature requires the ECB to watch carefully for direct effects, indirect effects and possible second-round effects.

However, she said the ECB is not yet seeing signs that second-round effects are emerging beyond what is already included in the baseline.

Lagarde also pointed to inflation expectations beyond the short term, saying they remain broadly anchored around the ECB’s medium-term target.

She added that the market-implied rate path is factored into the ECB’s work, as part of the market conditions assessed at the cut-off date.

However, she clarified that some governors asked whether the ECB should consider raising the three key interest rates at this meeting.

Lagarde said the Governing Council took a thorough look at the latest data and concluded unanimously that the ECB was adequately positioned to wait and monitor developments.

ECB President Christine Lagarde announced that the Governing Council decided to keep the three key ECB interest rates unchanged following its latest meeting in Frankfurt.

Lagarde said the ECB remains committed to ensuring that inflation stabilises at its 2% medium-term target.

She warned that uncertainty remains high, especially because of the energy shock linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Inflation fell to 2.8% in June, down from 3.2% in May, while energy inflation also declined but remained elevated.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his office does not have the authority to carry out the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called on US federal officials to step in.

The Hague-based International Criminal Court said in 2024 that it had reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu was responsible for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel's offensive in Gaza following the brutal 7 October 2023 cross-border attack by Hamas.

European Commissioner Michael McGrath explained how the European Commission addresses national legal developments in the Rule of Law Report.

McGrath said the Commission focuses on existing laws and policies, rather than giving continuous commentary on draft laws or proposals still moving through national procedures.

European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra defended the Commission’s proposed EU ETS review during the Q&A on the ETS and energy package.

Hoekstra said the debate should not focus only on the linear reduction factor, arguing that climate ambition must be judged by the full package of measures.

He explained that the proposal sets a 3.7% linear reduction factor for the first five years and 1.7% for the following five years, with more work done earlier because later emissions cuts become harder.

Hoekstra stressed that the figures are fully aligned with the European Climate Law and the EU’s climate targets.

He said the major difference compared with the current system is the stronger focus on investment on European soil, support for clean industry and measures to ensure a level playing field.

According to Hoekstra, Europe must avoid a situation where industry leaves the EU, because that would hurt the climate, businesses and workers.

His message was clear: Europe must produce in Europe, protect jobs and make industry much cleaner — not export emissions and lose competitiveness.

European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica opened the presentation of the third Demography Report, titled “Understanding Change and Adapting to Its Consequences,” warning that demographic change is not a distant challenge — it is already happening across Europe.

Šuica said demographic trends affect all generations and every region of the European Union, making them central to Europe’s competitiveness, both at home and globally.

She stressed that Europe has already built a stronger foundation for demographic policy, including a dedicated Commission portfolio, a new unit on demography, and growing attention in the European Parliament.

The Commissioner also called for more structured cooperation, including a future European Demographic Forum, and argued that Europe needs a stronger institutional framework — possibly even a European agency for demography — to connect data with real policymaking.

Šuica highlighted key challenges: longer life expectancy, falling birth rates, a shrinking workforce, pressure on healthcare and pensions, and the risk of overburdening younger generations.

She pointed to the importance of evidence-based solutions, including prevention in healthcare, higher labour market participation for women, well-managed legal migration, affordable housing, regional policy and support for rural areas.

Šuica warned that 83% of rural regions are expected to lose population, while cities face growing housing pressure. She said young people must be able to afford homes, start families and build their futures without being forced out of their communities.

Her message was clear: Europe must build a longevity society — one that supports young people, families, workers, older citizens and regions — and turn demographic change from a crisis into an opportunity.

European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica delivered closing remarks at the Demography Report presentation event, calling on Europe to respond to demographic change with action, optimism and practical solutions.

Šuica said demographic change creates serious challenges, but Europe still has room to turn those challenges into opportunities — especially through regional policy and cohesion policy.

She underlined the idea of a “right to stay”, describing it as a possible “fifth freedom” alongside the EU’s four freedoms. For Šuica, people should have real opportunities to live, work and build their future in their own regions, instead of being forced to leave because of lack of services, jobs or housing.

The Commissioner also stressed that demographic decline is not only a European issue. She pointed to falling birth rates worldwide, including India now falling below replacement rate, as proof that demographic pressure is becoming a global challenge.

Šuica highlighted several tools Europe can use: housing, well-managed migration, intergenerational fairness and regional policy.

She said the new Demography Report should serve as a compass for action, helping policymakers at local, regional, national and European level to work together.

Her message was clear: Europe must not fall into apathy or despair. Demographic change is real, but with the right policies, it can be managed — and Europe can build stronger, fairer and more resilient communities.

France is battling two fires that have already scorched nearly 2,000 hectares in a forest south of Paris, as police arrested two people suspected of arson.

The fire erupted in the sprawling Fontainebleau forest, a former royal hunting estate that today is dotted with quiet villages, about 60 kilometres southeast of the capital.

As the region sweltered through its latest heatwave, the wildfire, rare in the north of the country, quickly spread across the UNESCO biosphere reserve, disrupting rail and road traffic during a busy holiday travel long weekend.

A US immigration officer has fatally shot a man identified by rights groups as a 26-year-old Colombian, the second such killing by federal agents in less than a week.

The shooting happened in Biddeford, a town of 22,000 people in the northern state of Maine, and is likely to fuel criticism of President Donald Trump's deportation drive and its handling by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

US media identified the victim as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, who reportedly worked as a delivery driver and lived in Biddeford with his wife and three-year-old daughter.

The victim wasn’t the intended target of the ICE arrest warrant, according to a spokesperson to Senator Angus King of Maine.

Unser Gehirn altert. Schon ab Anfang 30 können Nervenverbindungen und Gehirnvolumen langsam abnehmen. Bedeutet das, dass wir zwangsläufig unflexibler, vergesslicher und irgendwann dement werden? Ganz so einfach ist es nicht. Und trotzdem beginnt Demenz VIEL früher, als man denkt. Lange, bevor sich die ersten Symptome zeigen.

Aber eine legendäre Langzeitstudie zeigt: Manche Menschen bleiben bis ins hohe Alter geistig fit, obwohl ihre Gehirne typische Veränderungen einer Demenz aufweisen. Gleichzeitig können sich bestimmte Hirnregionen durch intensives Training sogar vergrößern, wie bei Londoner Taxifahrern, die sich Tausende Straßen und Routen merken müssen. Dahinter stecken: Neuroplastizität und die sogenannte kognitive Reserve. Eine Art Puffer, der dem Gehirn helfen kann, Abbau länger auszugleichen.

Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheál Martin delivers one of the strongest moments of Ireland’s EU Presidency address at the European Parliament, calling for active diplomatic engagement to support lasting peace and security in the Middle East.

Speaking in Strasbourg, Martin reaffirms the European Union’s long-standing commitment to a two-state solution, while warning that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire and the situation in the West Bank is deteriorating.

He also delivers a sharp criticism of the Netanyahu government, describing its behaviour as increasingly extreme and saying that no democratic or humanitarian values can justify the scale of death, destruction and displacement seen in Gaza.

The remarks come as Ireland begins its six-month Presidency of the Council of the EU, with the European Parliament confirming that the Irish Presidency priorities include security, values, Ukraine, the Middle East, enlargement, competitiveness and the EU budget. European Council President António Costa also highlighted the Irish Presidency’s commitment to the two-state solution during the launch of Ireland’s EU Presidency in Dublin.

Martin’s message is clear: Europe must not look away from Gaza, must defend international law, and must push for a political path that protects civilians and keeps the two-state solution alive.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the security situation in Kosovo has continued to improve over recent years, allowing NATO to adjust the size of its KFOR mission.

Speaking ahead of the NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Rutte said NATO ended the deployment of reserve forces to KFOR in January, after two years of continuous rotation.

He explained that KFOR currently has around 4,700 troops, but NATO is now moving back toward pre-2023 levels. Depending on conditions on the ground, the mission is expected to continue with around 3,000 to 3,500 troops.

Rutte said the change reflects the improved security environment, while stressing that KFOR remains fully focused on its core mission: maintaining a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all communities in Kosovo.

His message was clear: NATO is reducing its posture because the situation has improved — but KFOR remains ready, present and committed to stability in Kosovo and the Western Balkans.

Staaten zahlen ihre Schulden selten vollständig zurück – und gehen trotzdem nicht bankrott. Wie das funktioniert, hängt nicht nur von Zahlen ab, sondern auch von Wachstum, Zinsen, Politik und vor allem Vertrauen. "42 – die Antwort auf fast alles" erklärt, wann Schulden nützlich sind und wann sie zur Gefahr werden.

Staatsschulden wirken auf den ersten Blick wie ein Widerspruch: Während Privatpersonen ihre Kredite irgendwann tilgen müssen, "rollen" Staaten ihre Schulden oft einfach weiter. Sie zahlen fällige Anleihen zurück, indem sie neue ausgeben.
Das funktioniert aber nur, solange Investoren Vertrauen haben, die Wirtschaft wächst und die Zinslast tragbar bleibt. Entscheidend ist dabei nicht nur die Höhe der Schulden, sondern auch, wofür sie verwendet werden. Kredite für Bildung, Infrastruktur oder die Energiewende können künftiges Wachstum ermöglichen. Schulden, die ausschließlich den laufenden Konsum finanzieren, sind deutlich riskanter.
Diese "42"-Folge schaut auf historische Krisen und aktuelle Beispiele: In Griechenland löste ein Vertrauensverlust eine Abwärtsspirale aus, während Japan trotz extrem hoher Verschuldung stabil bleibt, da die Schulden überwiegend im Inland gehalten werden. Die USA profitieren von der Sonderrolle des Dollars als globale Leitwährung – Zentralbanken, Ratingagenturen und politische Konflikte sind dabei ebenfalls von Bedeutung.
Denn es gibt keine magische Grenze, ab der Schulden automatisch zu viel werden. Kritisch wird es, wenn Zinsen dauerhaft schneller steigen als die Wirtschaftsleistung oder wenn Regierungen ihren Spielraum für Krisen bereits in guten Zeiten verbrauchen. Schulden sind kein Goldesel, sondern ein riskantes Werkzeug, das verantwortungsvoll eingesetzt werden muss.

Vor dem NATO-Gipfel bringt die Bundesregierung zwei zentrale Gesetze zur Stärkung der Bundeswehr auf den Weg. Neben einem Infrastruktur-Beschleunigungsgesetz soll vor allem die Reserve ausgebaut werden. Künftig soll für ehemalige Wehrdienstleistende die Zustimmung des Arbeitgebers für Reservedienstübungen entfallen. Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius betont, die Reserve müsse auf Augenhöhe mit der aktiven Truppe einsatzfähig bleiben. Zuvor hatte NATO-Generalsekretär Mark Rutte im Bendlerblock mit Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz und Pistorius über die Sicherheitslage und den bevorstehenden NATO-Gipfel beraten.

Wenn von Trauma die Rede ist, denken die meisten sofort an extreme Ereignisse: Krieg, Gewalt, schwere Unfälle oder Naturkatastrophen. Und tatsächlich: Solche Erfahrungen können tiefe seelische Spuren hinterlassen. Doch was, wenn Trauma nicht immer laut daherkommt? Wodurch kann ein Trauma sonst noch entstehen und woran merkt man überhaupt, dass man betroffen ist?

Ein Trauma ist kein Randphänomen – im Gegenteil. Laut der Psychologin Maggie Schauer sind seine Folgen in unserer Gesellschaft allgegenwärtig. Ein zentrales Merkmal vieler Traumafolgestörungen ist dabei eine Art innere Abspaltung: Besonders belastende Erlebnisse werden vom Bewusstsein getrennt. Betroffene können sich oft nicht richtig oder gar nicht an das ursprüngliche Ereignis erinnern. Trotzdem reagiert ihr Körper manchmal heftig auf bestimmte Reize, Gerüche, Situationen oder Stimmungen, die unbewusst an das Verdrängte anknüpfen.
Vor allem in der Gefühlswelt hinterlässt ein Trauma Spuren. Die Traumatherapeutin Aylin Thiel beschreibt diesen Prozess als Schutzmechanismus. Doch wer schon als Kind lernt, Gefühle zu unterdrücken oder abzuspalten, hält diesen "gedämpften" Zustand später oft für normal. Und Probleme wie wiederkehrende Konflikte in Beziehungen, diffuse innere Leere oder Depressionen erscheinen oft rätselhaft, weil ihre eigentliche Ursache im Verborgenen bleibt. Lässt sich dieses Rätsel lösen? Können wir den Spuren eines Traumas folgen – auch wenn die auslösenden Erfahrungen weit zurückliegen?
Wie prägend frühe Erfahrungen sein können, zeigt die Forschung der Neurobiologin Nicole Strüber. Bedingungen wie dauerhaft fehlende Sicherheit oder mangelnde emotionale Verfügbarkeit können bei Kindern Spuren hinterlassen, die sich messbar auf die Entwicklung ihres Nervensystems und ihres Gehirns auswirken. Ab wann wird eine belastende Erfahrung also zum Trauma? Sind tatsächlich so viele Menschen davon betroffen? Oder wird der Trauma-Begriff doch etwas zu großzügig verwendet?

IT-Störung beeinträchtigt den Bahnverkehr

Eine bundesweite IT-Störung hat den Bahnverkehr in Deutschland zeitweise erheblich beeinträchtigt. Über mehrere Stunden konnten Züge teilweise nicht weiterfahren, weil wichtige Kommunikationssysteme ausgefallen waren. Reisende mussten ihre Fahrten unterbrechen, auf Ersatzverkehr warten oder auf Taxis ausweichen. Nach Angaben der Deutschen Bahn konnte der Personenverkehr am Morgen zwar weitgehend wieder aufgenommen werden, im Güterverkehr kam es jedoch weiterhin zu Verzögerungen. Die Ursache der Störung wird derzeit untersucht.

Infrastruktur der Bahn: Verschiedene Systeme parallel ausgefallen

Nach bisherigen Informationen war nicht nur das reguläre Kommunikationssystem betroffen, sondern zunächst auch das vorgesehene Reservesystem. Fachleute weisen darauf hin, dass die Bahninfrastruktur auf unterschiedlichen technischen Standards basiert. Gerade im grenzüberschreitenden Bahnverkehr kommen verschiedene Systeme parallel zum Einsatz. Das erhöht die Komplexität und erschwert eine einheitliche Modernisierung der digitalen Infrastruktur. Die Deutsche Bahn arbeitet nach eigenen Angaben an der Aufklärung des Vorfalls.

Verspätungen und Zugausfälle für Reisende in Norddeutschland

Für viele Reisende bedeutete der Ausfall Verspätungen, Zugausfälle und kurzfristige Änderungen ihrer Reisepläne. Besonders an größeren Bahnhöfen kam es zeitweise zu erheblichen Einschränkungen. Während der Personenverkehr inzwischen weitgehend stabil läuft, müssen Rückstände im Güterverkehr weiterhin abgearbeitet werden.
